What to Expect When OSHA Knocks on Your Door

The Lake County Safety Council is proud to present the March program --- What to Expect When OSHA Knocks on Your Door --- on Friday, March 21.

The keynote speaker will be Howard B. Eberts, Area Director for the US Department of Labor - OSHA.

He started his OSHA career as a compliance officer (industrial hygienist) in the Columbus area office in 1988. And he has conducted a wide variety of safety and health enforcement inspections, including worker fatality investigations.

His areas of expertise include health hazard exposure to/for workers and chemical process safety management.

He currently oversees the Cleveland area office, an OSHA enforcement office with 28 people, including 17 compliance officers and two whistleblower investigators. The Cleveland area office, covering 12 counties in northeast Ohio, is one of four OSHA area offices in Ohio, the others are Toledo, Columbus and Cincinnati.

The program will:

---Identify how OSHA prioritizes, schedules and conducts inspections.

---Identify and review OSHA inspection statistics and enforcement initiatives.

---Identify what OSHA looks for during inspections.

---And assist companies in learning how to implement effective safety and health management systems, and how to highlight these efforts during OSHA inspections.

The meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites LaMalfa, with registration beginning at 11:15 a.m.

The cost of the event is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Reservations may be made online at the LCSC web site listed below.

Formulary Protects Injured Workers, Saves $20 Million

Changes to the Bureau of Workers Compensation pharmacy program led to a reduction in prescriptions of the most commonly overused drugs, and a savings of more than $20 million in total drug costs since 2011.

The BWC board of directors heard a presentation in January that opiate doses dropped by nearly million since 2010 - before the formulary was introduced. Opioid prescriptions dropped almost 28 percent and skeletal muscle relaxant prescription fell by 73 percent in 2013 verses 2010.

The formulary is updated regularly and includes guidelines for coverage of various drugs.

The BWC's newest pharmacy rule requires medical providers caring for chronically injured workers to use the Ohio Automated Rx (prescription) Reporting System (OARRS). This rule, which became effective January 1, is similar to the recently adopted statewide Opioid Prescribing Guidelines.
