BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene invites safety experts to contribute two-page discussion guides for others to use as a teaching tool for our online collection of Safety Talks. Supervisors and safety committees use these safety talks to encourage participation and interaction among employees.

BWC is accepting safety talks on: construction, especially trenching and excavation; workplace wellness (why wellness is important); respirators; driving in hazardous conditions (winter, floods, tornadoes, etc.); power tools; hoists and slings; aerial lifts and compressed air.

We want safety talks/discussion guides, not how-to articles. For example, submissions should include questions the discussion leader can ask the group and the appropriate responses. Include cited references, associated regulations and a list of additional resources for further use and development by the user. Refer to “Required elements” before you begin.

We publish each Safety Talk as a two-page 8 ½ x 11” PDF. Submissions should not exceed this length. Submissions must be original. We will not accept previously published or copyrighted material. Please submit your document in Microsoft Word. We will select talks based on technical accuracy, quality and the topic’s timeliness in the industry and workforce.

Required Elements:

• Safety Talks title - Short and to the point
• Author name - Include your title
• Before you begin - Items that people need to do ahead of time
• What you will learn? - One to three bullets highlighting the main objectives of the discussion
• Introduction - Two to three sentences, including risk factors this discussion will help prevent
• Discussion - Information explaining and illustrating the problem, a solution and an outcome (You can include questions to ask the group and appropriate answers)
• Conclusion - Three to four sentences
• References - List references you used to put this information together
• Author bio - Two to four sentences

We will accept submissions year round and will notify authors of acceptance of their articles. Eight weeks after acceptance, we will post articles on ohiobwc.com.
